NU: Idul Fitri to fall on Sept. 10
The East Java chapter of the country’s largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has predicted that Idul Fitri holiday, which marks and end to Ramadan fasting month, will fall on Sept. 10.
Deputy chairman of the group’s law making body Hasjim Abbas, who is a senior astronomer, said on Saturday that ijtimak, or geocentric conjunctions in which the Earth and the Moon are in the same longitude, would take place on Wednesday at between 5:20 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Ijtimak, which takes place every 29.5 days, marks an end to a month.
“The new moon will be difficult to see as the conjunctions will take place at 5:20 p.m. Observation of the new moon is hard to do at night,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Despite the difficulty, however, the NU office will observe the new moon in a number of places, such as Condro Dipo hill in Gresik, Kenjeran beach in Surabaya, Serang beach in Blitar, Ngliyep beach in Malang, Gili Ketapang beach in Probolinggo, and Tanjung Kodok beach in Lamongan.
When the moon is not visible then the beginning of the month will be set for the next day, or Sept. 10, Hasjim said.
“Usually if Syaban has 29 days, Ramadan will last 30 days,” he added.
